At Jackson High, Ethan and Lena have an English teacher whose name is Mrs. English. A couple of readers mentioned that an English teacher named Mrs. English is not very realistic.
Tell that to the real Ms. English. She is much younger and prettier than our Mrs. English, and we can't imagine anyone getting away with falling asleep in her class.
The real Ms. English wrote to tell us how much she loved BEAUTIFUL CREATURES and added, “Please take special note that I'm not 700 years old. I still have both eyes and my hearing is selective by choice.”
We wrote back and asked how people generally react when they learn about her very special name, and she had this to say:
“I have always had reactions to being Ms. English the English teacher. In college, I had professors joke about my major. During my teaching career, I've had to explain that my name is Ms. English and I really do teach English. I've also had to explain just about every year that I did not choose to be an English teacher because of my name. Parents often don't believe their child when they say Ms. English is their English teacher, and then proceed to need proof from their child. I've had kids comment that it would be 'messed up' if I taught math, because a Ms. English just shouldn't teach math.”
We have to agree – we hope she sticks to teaching English and maybe even TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. Oh, and reading our books.
